Reasons for Poor Work Performance
I was going over some old Entrepreneur magazines when I came across this article about revving up your organization. Here’s a small section of it:
Ferdinand Fournies’ 16 Reasons for Poor Performance
1. Workers don’t know why they should perform;
2. Workers don’t know how to perform;
3. Workers don’t know what they should do;
4. Workers don’t think their supervisor’s way will work;
5. Workers think their way is better than yours;
6. Workers think some other work is more important;
7. Workers have no reason for performing;
8. Workers think they are performing but aren’t;
9. Workers are rewarded for not performing in some way;
10. Workers are punished for doing what they are supposed to do in a particular way;
11. Workers believe they will receive some negative results from doing what they are supposed to do;
12. Workers receive no negative consequence for performing poorly or inadequately;
13. Workers face obstacles that keep them from performing, and those obstacles are beyond their ability to control and are the management’s fault;
14. Workers have personal limits in their ability, and the required performance exceeds what they are able to do;
15. Workers face personal problems such as psychological problems, financial problems, and legal problems; and
16. Nobody could perform the work as management requires or wants it to be performed but the desired performance is impossible.
I’ll bet managers and supervisors in any company would find this of interest.
